Statutory Credit Report

UK consumers have the right to obtain a copy of their personal credit report from the credit reference agencies upon payment of a fee of £2.00. This right to information is set in law under Section 7 of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Credit reference agencies are obligated to post a copy of your statutory credit report within 7 working days of receipt of your request and £2 payment. It is possible that each credit reference agency (Experian, Equifax & Callcredit) could hold different information on you. Therefore we suggest that you check your credit report with all 3 credit reference agencies.

What is a Statutory Credit Report?

These credit reports are often referred to as being "Annual Credit Report", "£2 Credit Report", or a "Yearly Credit Report". The reason for this is that the credit reference agencies (Equifax, Experian & Callcredit) are only required to provide you with your credit file when a "reasonable interval has elapsed between compliance with the previous request and the making of the current request" for a credit report. It is often regarded by the public that a reasonable period is 12 months. The fee for obtaining your credit file by this method is legally set at two pounds.

How to Apply For Your Credit Report

Alternatively, if you prefer to order by post you can download a copy of the printable Experian application form. The printed form should be mailed (along with a cheque or postal order for £2) to: Consumer Help Service, Experian Limited, PO BOX 8000, Nottingham NG80 7WF.

Is it a Good Idea to Apply for a Copy of Your £2 Credit Report?

Spending £2 with each credit reference agency is certainly a cheap way to see your credit files and gain an understanding of your credit history.

Placing such an order enables you to be able to dispute any inaccurate information on your credit file. If any inaccuracies exist, the credit reference agencies must by law correct these for you within 28 days of notification.

The only real disadvantages of ordering a £2 credit file compared to other credit checking services are

• You have to wait up to 7 working days for your credit report to arrive in the post
• You don’t get to see your credit score / credit rating
• It’s a one off ‘snapshot of your credit report (there is no level of credit monitoring)
• You miss out on some of the detailed analysis available from the online services.
• Manual printing an posting of your credit file application form is required (Callcredit only)

It is possible to avoid these disadvantages and to save on the £2 fee. In order to do this you would need to sign up to services such as the Free Equifax Credit Report, or Experian Credit Expert.
